As a newborn and family photographer in Central Pennsylvania, I have a lot of experience with the sibling/newborn dynamic! Newborn sessions can be tough for the new big brother or sister. They are not the center of attention yet again since bringing the baby home. That is why I will always do my best to make a BIG deal about them when I first arrive in your home to photograph your newest addition. I want them to know that I am there just as much for them, and I am going to need their help with the session!
Don’t be surprised when I ask for all kinds of help from the bigger sibling(s)! It makes them feel involved and a bigger part of what is happening. I will also give them breaks when I feel like their attention is waning.
And one more thing I will do? Give them a chance to shine all on their own for a few minutes. So, don’t get too stressed when you think they aren’t behaving! Most likely, they giving me just enough, and they are doing the best they can in their newest role! My best advice to all moms and dads during any session… no matter the level of stress you may be feeling… trust me, trust the process, and always keep smiling (even through what may feel chaotic)!!
