Coming in with a hot topic that is always a challenge… What to wear to a family session!
My biggest advice is – Don’t over think this too much and always start with shopping in your own closet first.
Pick a place to start. I always recommend starting with mom’s outfit! Pick something you are comfortable and feel beautiful in! Then you can draw inspiration from the colors and patterns in your outfit when choosing outfits for everyone else!
Don’t stress too much about the kids either! If you know they are going to HATE the collared shirt and stiff shoes, don’t force it! Let them help with the process. Give them options and let them pick from that. It will allow them to feel like they’ve helped and had a choice in what they get to wear!
If you aren’t a fancy family, don’t try to be for your photos. Besides, we aren’t here to photograph your outfits! We are here to capture the connections, emotions, and love you share!
I loved what Bec did here with her family session in Carlisle, PA! She let everyone wear what they wanted with some casual guidance on her part. Sure, not everyone matched, but it worked and it was glorious! No one is complaining about stuffy clothes!
Oh and barefoot! I will ALWAYS always be an advocate of going barefoot!
So, if you want to know what to wear to a family session, it’s simple. Dress how you want to dress! Choose comfort over fashion! Be true to yourself and your family, there is no dress code here!
